Sensor-Assisted Total Knee Replacement

Dr. Gallivan utilizes OrthoSensor’s VERASENSE sensor technology in total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. The sensor helps Dr. Gallivan to improve the balance and stability of your knee - two factors that contribute to a successful knee replacement and the longevity of your knee implant.

Quality Orthopaedic Care

William R. Gallivan, Jr., MD is committed to providing the highest quality of orthopaedic care possible. Whether treating immediate or chronic problems, he strives to create individualized treatment plans that maximize his patients comfort and function so they can return to a more active lifestyle.

What distinguishes Dr. Gallivan are the following techniques:

Rapid Knee Recovery

Dr. Gallivan utilizes a minimally invasive approach for knee replacement surgery. Less cutting of tissue and muscles allow quicker return of function with less pain. Combined with computer navigation and sensor technology, this approach leads to accurate placement of implants. The vast majority of patients are able to avoid a general anesthetic and are walking comfortably within hours of surgery. Improved pain and nausea control facilitate early hospital discharge.

Partial Knee Replacement with Robotics

Partial knee replacement – which may be indicated for treating arthritis which is limited to a single compartment of the knee – further decreases disruption of normal anatomy also allowing quick recovery and discharge.

The Modified Anterolateral Approach

The less invasive anterolateral approach has proven to be a very reliable technique for total hip arthroplasty or resurfacing. Dr. Gallivan utilizes this approach with patients positioned face up on the operating table. This position and technique allow accurate assessment of leg length and implant positioning which leads to excellent stability and very low risk of nerve injury. Computer Navigation further increases the accuracy of implant placement.
